April 1920', with two facsimile signatures of the Vize-Bürgermeister and the Bürgermeister. Gars am Kamp is a small market town in Lower Austria's Kamptal wine region, and this 20 Heller note is one of the thousands of Notgeld issues that Austrian municipalities were forced to produce after World War I when small-denomination coinage disappeared almost entirely from circulation. The printer, F. Berger of Horn, handled a significant volume of Kamptal-area emergency currency during this period — Horn being the nearest town of any commercial scale to Gars.
Karl Elleder's involvement as designer places this above the purely functional end of the Notgeld spectrum. Elleder contributed designs to multiple Lower Austrian issues around 1920.
