A central oval panel with a fine crosshatch guilloche underprint carries the full authorising text in Gothic script, including the issuance date of 18 July 1920 and the municipality's liability clause. Below the text panel appear three facsimile manuscript signatures — those of the Bürgermeister and two Gemeinderäte — followed by an anti-counterfeiting warning. |

One of thousands of Austrian municipal notgeld issues from the postwar currency crisis, this 20 Heller note from Eschenau im Pinzgau belongs to a wave of emergency scrip produced between 1919 and 1921 when the collapsed Habsburg monetary system left small communities without adequate small-denomination coinage. Eschenau is a tiny settlement in the Salzburg uplands; that a village of this size was issuing its own paper currency is itself a measure of how completely the old financial infrastructure had disintegrated.
The JPR0188b suffix indicates a variant within the Eschenau series — likely a printing or color difference from the 'a' type.
