Ernstbrunn is a market town in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similar communities it resorted to printing its own Notgeld during the postwar currency chaos of 1919–1921, when small-denomination coins had effectively vanished from circulation. The Austrian state simply could not keep pace with demand for fractional coinage, leaving towns to fill the gap with locally issued paper scrip.
M. Salzer was a well-established Viennese printing firm that handled a significant volume of Lower Austrian municipal Notgeld during this period — a practical choice for small communes without access to specialist security printers.
