Erlauf is a small market town in Lower Austria, and this note is a product of the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria in the immediate postwar years — a shortage so severe that hundreds of municipalities, businesses, and cooperatives printed their own Notgeld to keep local commerce moving. The Sommer printing house in St. Pölten supplied a number of these regional issues, which accounts for the shared production quality across several Lower Austrian communities from the same period.
Three signatories authenticate the note, consistent with the administrative caution typical of municipal treasury instruments.
