Enns is among the oldest documented cities in Austria — Roman Lauriacum stood on this ground — but that history has nothing to do with why this note exists. It exists because Austria in 1920 was in the grip of a severe small-coin shortage, and hundreds of municipalities issued their own Notgeld to fill the gap left by the collapsed Habsburg monetary system. Stadtgemeinde Enns was one of them.
The print run of over twelve million for a single municipal denomination is striking given the town's modest size. E. Priegel in nearby Steyr handled production for numerous Upper Austrian communities during this period, which accounts for the volume — these were essentially regional printing contracts, not local hand-runs.
