Eggenberg was an independent municipality west of Graz until its absorption into the city in 1938. Like hundreds of Austrian municipalities during the Notgeld period of 1919–1921, it issued small-denomination paper emergency money to address the acute coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg economy. The 20 Heller denomination was among the most commonly struck values across the Steiermark issues — practical for everyday transactions when metal coinage had all but vanished from circulation.

The Jaksc catalogue remains the authoritative reference for Steiermark Notgeld, filling gaps the broader Pick system leaves unresolved for local Austrian issues.
