Eggelsberg is a small village in Upper Austria, and this note is a product of the catastrophic currency fragmentation that followed Austria-Hungary's dissolution. By 1920, the new Austrian Republic was hemorrhaging small coins — hoarding and metal shortages had stripped them entirely from everyday commerce — forcing hundreds of municipalities to print their own emergency Kleingeld. Eggelsberg's series was among thousands issued under this system, known as Notgeld.
The designer credit to L. Haase is worth noting; local Notgeld was frequently farmed out to regional printers or commercial artists rather than produced in-house, though attribution details for Haase remain thin.
