| Obverse description | Printed in dark brownish-red on cream paper, the obverse is dominated by the large bold letterpress legend 'GUTSCHEIN DER ORTSGEMEINDE: EBENSEE' beneath the municipal coat of arms centred at the top. Flanking the central text panel are two symmetrical Art Nouveau-style vignettes of stylised ibex or chamois figures with foliate ornamentation. The lower portion carries a multi-line German text detailing the terms of issuance dated 'Ebensee, am 17. April 1920', followed by three manuscript signatures for the Vizebürgermeister, Bürgermeister, and Gemeinderat, with the year '1920' integrated into the lower decorative border. |

Ebensee's wartime salt-mining economy left the town chronically short of small change well into the postwar years, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities it resorted to printing its own Notgeld rather than wait for Vienna to resolve the coin shortage. The Salzkammergut-Druckerei in nearby Gmunden handled a significant share of the regional emergency currency output — a practical arrangement given the press's proximity to the lakeside communities it served.
