Lausa bei Losenstein is a tiny rural commune in the Steyr-Kirchdorf district of Upper Austria — the kind of community that would never have issued currency under ordinary circumstances. The Ortsgemeinde series of 1920 represents emergency local scrip produced because the central monetary system had effectively ceased to function at the small-denomination level, with coins hoarded or melted and the Vienna government unable to supply adequate fractional currency to outlying communities.
