Anthering is a small village north of Salzburg, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it was forced into the notgeld business by a national coin shortage so severe that small transactions had become practically impossible. The Gemeinde commissioned S. u. K. Müller in Salzburg to produce this 20 Heller note, with design work attributed to F.X. Stadler — a local arrangement typical of the Salzburg region's approach to emergency currency, where printing and design stayed close to home.
