One of thousands of Austrian municipal emergency notes — Notgeld — printed in the immediate postwar years as small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation entirely. Altheim, a market town in Upper Austria near the Bavarian border, contracted the job to J. Stampfl in nearby Braunau rather than one of the larger Vienna printers, which kept costs down and turned around local orders quickly. The designer credit to L. Daringer is unusually specific for a note of this type; most Gemeinde-level commissions went uncredited.
Three signatories authenticate the issue — the Bürgermeister, Vizebürgermeister, and a Gemeinderat — reflecting the formal municipal resolution required to authorize paper substitutes for coin.
