Altenberg's 20 Heller notgeld was produced by L. Haase in Linz — a printer responsible for a significant share of Upper Austrian municipal emergency money during the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The Gemeinde Altenberg, a small parish commune in Upper Austria, was forced into issuing its own fractional currency because the newly formed Austrian republic simply could not supply adequate coinage in the chaotic months following the armistice.
The JPR0025b designation within the Jaksc catalog indicates this is the second paper variant for the 20 Heller denomination, suggesting at least one earlier issue existed under the same authority.
