Aggsbach Dorf is a small village on the south bank of the Danube in Lower Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities after 1918, when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left local communities without adequate small change. Franz Wedl was a Melk-based printer who produced emergency currency for several nearby parishes and villages during this period — a regional job printer pressed into an unusual role.
The single signature, A. Panedschneider, almost certainly represents a local municipal official rather than a banker.
