Rodaun was a small village southwest of Vienna — today absorbed into the 23rd district — that issued this Heller note as part of the vast Austrian Notgeld wave of 1914–1921, when wartime metal shortages forced even minor municipalities to produce their own small-change currency. The printer, F. Seitenberg of Vienna's third district, handled a number of these local emergency issues and was decidedly a commercial rather than a security printer.
Jaksch/Pick 0840 is a scarce entry — Rodaun's output was small by any measure, reflecting its population at the time.
