Gneixendorf is a small village — now a suburb of Krems an der Donau in Lower Austria — that would be entirely obscure were it not for the fact that Beethoven spent his final autumn there in 1826, finishing the String Quartet Op. 135 at his brother Johann's estate. The village's notgeld has nothing to do with that connection; it was issued purely out of necessity during the acute coin shortage that swept rural Austria in the postwar years, when municipal and local authorities across the former empire printed their own emergency small-denomination paper rather than see commerce grind to a halt.

The Jaksc cataloguing suffix "llc" indicates a specific variant within the 20 Heller denomination — most Gneixendorf notgeld series are collected as sets, and incomplete runs are common.
