Sarajevo's municipal emergency notes of 1919 belong to a specific and chaotic window: the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes had just been proclaimed, but no unified currency had been established, and the transition away from Austro-Hungarian Kronen left local economies scrambling. Municipalities across the former imperial territories issued their own notgeld-style scrip to fill the void — Sarajevo among them.
Locally printed on whatever stock was available, these small-denomination pieces show it. Paper quality varies significantly across surviving examples, a direct consequence of wartime and immediate postwar supply shortages in Bosnia.
