20 Goldpfennige Amtshauptmannschaft Werdau

Werdau's rural district authority — the Amtshauptmannschaft — issued this Goldpfennige-denominated emergency note during the stabilization phase of the 1923 hyperinflation, when Germany was transitioning away from worthless Papiermark. Denominating notgeld in Goldpfennige was a deliberate hedge: by anchoring the face value to gold rather than inflating paper marks, issuers attempted to give the scrip credible purchasing power during the weeks before the Rentenmark took hold in November 1923.

The watermarked paper is notable — most district-level notgeld of this period used plain stock. It suggests either access to pre-war bank paper or a conscious attempt to deter local counterfeiting.
