The seventh series of Swiss National Bank notes, to which this belongs, was designed by Ernst and Ursula Hiestand and took an unusually long time to reach circulation — the series was commissioned in the 1960s but not introduced until 1976. The 20-franc denomination entered circulation in 1978 and remained valid until the eighth series phased it out, with final demonetization coming in April 2000, cutting off exchange rights entirely — an unusual hard stop for a country that had historically allowed open-ended redemption.
Orell Füssli in Zurich has printed Swiss banknotes for well over a century, and the seventh series reflected that continuity through high-quality intaglio work.
