20 Francs Varanus Priscus

The Varanus priscus, more commonly called Megalania, was an Australian monitor lizard that reached estimated lengths of 3.5 to 7 metres — the largest terrestrial lizard known to have existed. It died out roughly 40,000 years ago, possibly accelerated by the arrival of humans on the continent. Whether early Aboriginal Australians encountered it remains an open and occasionally contentious question among palaeontologists.

The DRC has issued wildlife-themed silver rounds under the 20 Francs denomination since the early 2000s, with numismatic value bearing no relationship to the country's domestic monetary reality.
