(Translation: Rainier III, Prince of Monaco)
Reverse description The crowned coat of arms of Monaco — a lozenge-patterned shield of fusils in fess — is centrally placed, flanked on either side by the large denomination numerals '20' to the left and 'FRS' to the right. The word 'ESSAI' appears below the shield in the field, while the motto 'DEO JUVANTE' is inscribed along the lower rim within a beaded border. The heraldic crown surmounting the shield is rendered in fine detail, and the overall design is framed by an outer beaded circle.

Additional information

Essai pieces from the Monnaie de Paris for Monaco were produced in extremely limited quantities — typically no more than a few hundred strikes — as pattern submissions rather than circulation currency. This 1950 essai preceded the actual 20 Francs issue and was never released to the public. Rainier III had only assumed rule in May 1949 following the death of Louis II, making this among the earliest coinage submissions bearing his effigy.
