Piefort essais from the early Fourth Republic were produced by the Monnaie de Paris as internal circulation trials — struck at double or greater thickness to test die performance and alloy behavior before committing to full production runs. The 1953 aluminium bronze piefort sits in a particularly unstable monetary moment: France had already cycled through multiple franc devaluations since the Liberation, and the question of what metal would even sustain a new coinage was genuinely open.
