In 1950, the French Mint produced a series of pattern coins as part of an ongoing effort to redesign the franc coinage following postwar monetary instability. The Guzman patterns belong to a competitive submission process in which outside artists and engravers were invited to propose designs — most never advanced beyond trial strikes. Surviving examples exist in very small numbers, with variants distinguished by subtle differences in die preparation that account for the Mazard reference qualifier here.
