The 1807–1808 20 Francs sits at a transitional moment in Napoleonic coinage: these are the years immediately following the Continental System decrees, when France was simultaneously restructuring European trade and overhauling its monetary infrastructure. The Germinal franc standard, established in 1803, was still bedding in, and the Paris mint was under considerable pressure to produce gold coinage credible enough to function across occupied territories.
F#515 / KM#687 corresponds to the "Emperor" portrait type, distinct from the earlier Consul issues. Dies from this short window are known to show variable quality, a consequence of the mint workforce absorbing new mechanized equipment.
