Louis II had governed Monaco under Italian occupation since 1942, and by liberation in 1944 the principality faced an urgent need to replace the wartime coinage that had circulated under Axis-aligned arrangements. This 1945 essai — a trial strike submitted for approval rather than intended for general release — was part of that monetary reconstruction effort. The copper-nickel composition itself reflects immediate postwar material constraints; nickel supplies across Europe were severely disrupted, and essais from this period often differ in alloy from whatever eventually reached circulation.
