| Reverse description | The reverse presents a naturalistic depiction of a giant pangolin (Smutsia gigantea) rendered in fine detail, the animal shown in a crouched posture with its distinctive overlapping keratinous scales meticulously engraved across the body and tail. The curved upper legend LES ANIMAUX D'EXCEPTION arcs along the rim, identifying the series dedicated to exceptional animals. The species name Pangolin géant appears in italic lettering to the lower right of the device, and the date 2003 is inscribed at the base of the field. |

| Additional information |
The Democratic Republic of Congo has issued a long-running series of wildlife-themed gold minims — fractional pieces aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. The giant pangolin, one of the world's most heavily trafficked mammals, rarely appears on coinage of any nation despite its ecological notoriety.
KM#138 was produced by a European private mint under contract, as the Banque Centrale du Congo has never operated domestic minting facilities.
