Obverse description Draped bust of Marianne wearing a Phrygian cap, facing left, her hair flowing freely behind her neck, in the style engraved by R. Joly. The circular legend RÉPVBLIQVE FRANÇAISE runs around the upper periphery, with the engraver's name R·JOLY incused in the right field. The word ESSAI appears in the lower left field, and the date 1967 is prominently displayed in the lower exergual area flanked by two dots.

Reverse description A stylised Melanesian ceremonial mask facing left dominates the central field, rendered in a bold, decorative indigenous artistic style with incised geometric patterning across the forehead and face. The mask is flanked on either side by large spiral motifs reminiscent of traditional Vanuatu design. The denomination 20 f appears in large numerals and a stylised franc symbol in the lower central field. The legend NOUVELLES HÉBRIDES arcs around the upper periphery.
