The Institut d'Émission Malgache was established by France in 1950 to manage currency for Madagascar while maintaining the CFA franc zone's monetary framework — a structure designed to keep former colonies financially tethered to Paris well after political autonomy became inevitable. This 1953 issue predates Malagasy independence by seven years, struck at a moment when the island was still recovering from the brutal suppression of the 1947 uprising, in which French forces killed an estimated 11,000 to 80,000 Malagasy.
Aluminium bronze was the material of colonial small change across French Africa in this period, chosen for durability in tropical climates.
