Kuwait's fils coinage was introduced in 1961 following independence from Britain, replacing the Gulf rupee that had circulated under a currency arrangement shared with several Trucial States. The 20 fils denomination saw continuous reissue across five decades with minimal design alteration — a longevity that reflects the political stability of the Al-Sabah government rather than any monetary reform agenda.
One interruption worth noting: the Iraqi occupation of 1990–91 saw Kuwaiti coinage temporarily disappear from circulation, with the dinar itself suspended. Post-liberation reissues resumed the same specifications without modification.
