Issued to mark Willem-Alexander's fiftieth birthday in April 2017, this coin was produced by the Royal Dutch Mint at Utrecht — the same institution that has struck Dutch coinage almost without interruption since the late medieval period, though it operates today as a private entity following its 2016 privatization. The timing of that ownership change, just months before this coin's release, made the piece one of the first commemorative gold issues produced under the mint's new commercial structure.
