Issued to mark the centenary of Linna's birth, this coin arrives at a peculiar moment in Finnish commemorative policy — silver collector issues had been declining in frequency, making this release a deliberate exception. Linna's 1954 novel The Unknown Soldier had already been adapted into film three times by the coin's issue date, the third adaptation released in 2017 to considerable domestic controversy over its tone.
His other major work, the Here Under the North Star trilogy, remains the closest thing Finland has to a national novel of social history, chronicling the Civil War of 1918 from the losing side.
