UEFA Euro 2020 was postponed a full year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ultimately played across eleven host cities in June and July 2021 — yet all associated merchandise, commemoratives, and this coin retained the original "2020" designation by UEFA's deliberate branding decision. Germany issued this piece under the long-running €20 silver commemorative program administered by the Federal Ministry of Finance, which has produced collector-oriented issues annually since the denomination was introduced in 2002. The tournament itself saw Italy defeat England on penalties in the final at Wembley.
