Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a richly composed scene referencing Zweig's celebrated novella 'Schachnovelle' (The Royal Game). In the left foreground, a portrait of a pensive, bespectacled male figure — evoking the protagonist — is shown in three-quarter view, holding a chess piece. Several chess pieces, including a queen, a bishop, and pawns, are arranged prominently in the lower field. In the background, the superstructure and funnel of an ocean liner are depicted, alluding to the shipboard chess match central to the story, while a solitary figure gazes outward at the stern. The title inscription 'SCHACHNOVELLE' is engraved vertically along the right side of the field.
