The Sapieha Palace in Vilnius was built in the late 17th century for the Sapieha family, one of the most powerful magnate dynasties in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth — at their peak, wealthier and more militarily capable than many sovereign rulers. The palace changed hands repeatedly after the Commonwealth's partitions, serving at various points as a military barracks and hospital under Russian imperial administration, which left the structure in prolonged disrepair.

Lithuania's numismatic program has issued architectural silver pieces tied to ongoing restoration efforts; the Sapieha Palace was undergoing active reconstruction at the time of this coin's release.
