| Additional information |
Corvey was founded in 822 AD as a Benedictine monastery on the Weser River and became one of the most influential ecclesiastical centers in the Carolingian empire — its scriptorium produced manuscripts that circulated as far as England. The abbey church, consecrated in 885, retains its original Carolingian westwork, one of the few surviving examples in Europe and the reason UNESCO added Corvey to its World Heritage List in 2014.
This issue belongs to Germany's ongoing UNESCO World Heritage Sites series, which has run since 2011. The westwork at Corvey still bears ninth-century plasterwork in its upper chapel.
