Obverse description The obverse displays the quartered coat of arms of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF) in the center field, rendered in a distinctive informal engraving style. The shield is divided into four quarters depicting, respectively, a stylized southern royal albatross, an emperor penguin with outstretched flippers, a crowned elephant seal, and a rocky Antarctic island or rocky outcrop. The territorial name TERRES AUSTRALES et ANTARCTIQUES FRANÇAISES is inscribed in a bold, informal lettering style across the upper field. To the right of the arms, the French Republican motto 'liberté égalité fraternité' appears in cursive script, accompanied by the date 2004 and the RF monogram, while the word ESSAI appears in the lower exergue.
