Otto Dix turned 125 in 2016, the occasion for this commemorative. Germany has issued collector silver in his name before, but the timing here matters: Dix spent years on the Nazi "degenerate art" list, his work confiscated from museums across the country in 1937. That the Federal Republic would later put him on currency is a pointed reversal — the same state apparatus, reconstituted, formally rehabilitating the man it once tried to erase.
Stuttgart's Staatliche Münze struck this one, appropriate given that Dix spent much of his later life in the Lake Constance region of Baden-Württemberg.
