Obverse description The German Federal Eagle (Bundesadler) is depicted in the centre of the field, rendered in a stylised heraldic manner with spread wings and downward-facing head. The circular legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND arcs along the upper rim, flanked on either side by a series of five-pointed stars representing the European Union. Below the eagle, the denomination 20 EURO appears prominently, followed by the inscription SILBER 925 and the date 2017 in the lower field. The mint mark G, denoting the Staatliche Münze Karlsruhe, appears to the right beneath the eagle's tail feathers.

Reverse description The reverse features a finely detailed depiction of Karl Drais astride his invention, the Laufmaschine (dandy horse), the forerunner of the modern bicycle. The figure of Drais is shown in period dress, propelling himself forward with both feet upon a road, rendered in profile to the right, conveying a sense of motion and energy. In the background to the right, a horse-drawn carriage is visible, providing historical context and contrasting the new invention with the conventional transport of the era. The curved legend LAUFMASCHINE VON KARL DRAIS arcs along the upper left portion of the rim, while the commemorative date 1817, marking the invention of the Laufmaschine, appears in the lower exergue.
