Joseph Poelaert is best known as the architect of the Palais de Justice in Brussels, completed in 1883 after nearly two decades of construction — a project so disruptive to the working-class Marolles neighborhood whose homes were demolished to make way for it that locals coined the term *architekt* as a slang word for thief, a usage that persisted in Brussels dialect for generations.
