| Obverse description | A stylized map of the European Union occupies the central field, rendered in dotted relief against a mirror-polished background. To the left, a vertical band bearing twelve five-pointed stars — the symbol of the European Union — runs along the rim. The denomination '20 EURO' is inscribed in bold relief at the upper centre, with the date '2017' appearing just below. The trilingual country name legend 'BELGIQUE BELGIE BELGIEN' is arranged along the right and lower periphery of the field. |

Joseph Poelaert is best known as the architect of the Palais de Justice in Brussels, completed in 1883 after nearly two decades of construction — a project so disruptive to the working-class Marolles neighborhood whose homes were demolished to make way for it that locals coined the term *architekt* as a slang word for thief, a usage that persisted in Brussels dialect for generations.
