Beschrijving voorzijde Three-quarter length effigy of Pope John Paul II facing slightly left, vested in pontifical cope and papal tiara, holding a pastoral staff in his left hand. The portrait, modelled by Floriano Bodini, is rendered in high relief against a dark mirror field, conveying a sense of solemn authority. The encircling Latin legend reads AN.XXVI.MMIV to the left and IOANNES PAULUS II P.M. to the right, recording the twenty-sixth year of his pontificate and the year 2004. The engraver's signature BODINI appears in small characters at the lower left of the effigy.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents a dynamic high-relief composition depicting the biblical scene of David and Goliath, after the sculptural work of Luciana De Simoni. To the left, the towering armoured figure of Goliath is shown staggering and beginning to fall, while the youthful David stands triumphantly to the right, his sling raised aloft and the severed head of Goliath at his feet. The mint mark R for the Rome Mint appears in the left field. The legend CITTA DEL VATICANO arcs across the upper periphery, with the denomination 20 EURO inscribed in the lower exergue.
