| Obverse description | Three-quarter length effigy of Pope John Paul II facing slightly left, vested in pontifical cope and papal tiara, holding a pastoral staff in his left hand. The portrait, modelled by Floriano Bodini, is rendered in high relief against a dark mirror field, conveying a sense of solemn authority. The encircling Latin legend reads AN.XXVI.MMIV to the left and IOANNES PAULUS II P.M. to the right, recording the twenty-sixth year of his pontificate and the year 2004. The engraver's signature BODINI appears in small characters at the lower left of the effigy. |
