Germany's "Fauna Germanica" gold series launched in 2019 with the intention of documenting native wildlife through annual issues. The grey seal — Halichoerus grypus — is the largest wild land-breeding mammal native to Germany, with the country's primary breeding colony established on Düne island off Helgoland in the North Sea. That population was essentially absent from German waters through much of the twentieth century, recovering only after hunting protections took effect in the latter half of it.
The .9999 fineness places this above the standard .999 gold used in most German bullion issues of earlier decades.
