Echternach, the subject of this commemorative, is home to the oldest abbey in Luxembourg, founded by the Northumbrian monk Willibrord in 698 AD. The town's famous Springprozession — a hopping pilgrimage to Willibrord's tomb held annually on Whit Tuesday — was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, though not until 2010, more than a decade after this coin was struck.
