San Marino issues gold coins not as circulating currency but under bilateral agreements with Italy, which has administered the republic's monetary arrangements since the 1862 convention — a relationship that survived the lira era and carried forward into the euro framework through a separate accord signed in 2000. Annual gold issues are struck at the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Rome, San Marino having no mint of its own.
