Maria Theresa inherited the Habsburg lands in 1740 at twenty-three, immediately facing the War of the Austrian Succession — Frederick the Great invaded Silesia within weeks of her accession, gambling that a young woman would not hold the dynasty together. He was wrong, though Silesia was lost permanently. This coin is the second in Austria's six-part "Maria Theresa" series, the overall arc of which traces her reign chronologically rather than thematically.
The .925 fineness is a slight departure from Austria's more familiar .900 silver issues of earlier commemorative programs.
