Beschrijving voorzijde A finely detailed depiction of an early nineteenth-century steam locomotive occupies the central field, rendered in high relief with meticulous attention to mechanical detail including the boiler, driving wheels, and cab with figures of enginemen visible at the footplate. The locomotive is shown in three-quarter view travelling along rails, evoking the pioneering era of Austrian railway development during the Biedermeier period. The year 2003 appears to the lower left of the engine. The legend REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 20 EURO is inscribed in large characters along the lower rim.

Beschrijving keerzijde A three-quarter-length portrait bust of Prince Klemens von Metternich dominates the field, depicted in formal attire adorned with a prominent decorative order at the collar. His powdered wig and period dress are rendered with fine engraving detail characteristic of Austrian proof coinage. To the sinister background, a stylised outline map of Europe is incused into the mirror field, referencing Metternich's pivotal role as architect of the Concert of Europe. The legend FÜRST METTERNICH arcs along the upper right periphery, with the birth and death years 1773 and 1859 inscribed in two lines to the right of the portrait.
