Issued to mark the 220th anniversary of the Battle of Austerlitz, fought on December 2, 1805 — Napoleon's tactical masterstroke in which he feigned weakness on his right flank to lure the Austro-Russian coalition into overextending, then shattered their center at the Pratzen Heights. The French lost roughly 1,300 killed against combined enemy losses exceeding 35,000 killed, wounded, or captured. It effectively ended the War of the Third Coalition and led directly to the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire within months.
The 3.11 g specification places this squarely in the quarter-troy-ounce format the Monnaie de Paris has standardized for its smaller gold commemorative runs.
