| Obverse description | Bust of the French chemist Claude Berthollet facing right, rendered in moderate relief with naturalistic detail of his period dress and flowing hair. Twelve five-pointed stars encircle the design along the inner border, evoking the European motif. The birth and death years '1748' and '1822' appear vertically in the left and right fields respectively, flanking the portrait. The legend 'CLAUDE BERTHOLLET' curves along the lower portion of the field, with the engraver's signature 'C CARDOT' inscribed discreetly near the truncation. |
