Algirdas Julien Greimas (1917–1992) was a Lithuanian-born structural linguist and semiotician who spent most of his career in France, becoming one of the central figures of the Paris School of semiotics. His "semiotic square" — a tool for mapping conceptual oppositions — became foundational in literary theory and discourse analysis. The Bank of Lithuania has a long-standing program of commemorating Lithuanian intellectuals who made their careers abroad under Soviet occupation, a circumstance that forced an entire generation of scholars into the diaspora.
