Obverse description The obverse features a bold abstract composition inspired by the graphic and decorative style of Akseli Gallen-Kallela, rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. Interlocking wave-like and sinuous lines form a dynamic central motif evoking elements of Finnish nature and Art Nouveau design. The field is divided by geometric panels, with the country name legend 'SUOMI' appearing vertically along the left border and 'FINLAND' inscribed horizontally at the bottom. The date '2015' appears centrally above 'FINLAND', and the denomination '20 €' is inscribed vertically along the right border.

Additional information

Akseli Gallen-Kallela dominated Finnish visual culture at the turn of the twentieth century, most famously through his paintings illustrating the Kalevala — the national epic compiled by Elias Lönnrot from Finnish oral tradition. The 2015 issue marks the 150th anniversary of Gallen-Kallela's birth. Finland has a long history of using its collector silver program to honor figures whose work was inseparable from the construction of Finnish national identity during the autonomy period under Russian imperial rule.

The Bank of Finland issues these commemoratives through the Mint of Finland, which had already been privatized by this point — production handled by Rahapaja Oy.
